Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's December 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

George Dixon Academy excels at creating an inclusive, welcoming environment where pupils of all backgrounds feel valued and respected. The school is determined to support disadvantaged pupils and has significantly improved its curriculum so that students, especially in the sixth form, build strong subject knowledge and develop the skills needed for life beyond school. Staff relationships with pupils are strong, behaviour is generally good, and the school successfully helps students move on to positive destinations.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on equality, diversity and tolerance, celebrating different cultures and backgrounds through the curriculum
  • Improved curriculum design with clear knowledge progression, particularly benefiting key stage 3 pupils
  • Excellent sixth-form provision with students achieving well and developing strong independence and study skills
  • Effective careers guidance that raises pupil aspirations and leads to positive destinations
  • Good behaviour culture with strong classroom routines and respectful relationships between staff and pupils

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not consistently use assessment systems to identify misconceptions, causing some pupils to develop knowledge gaps before moving to new learning
  • Many key stage 4 pupils have gaps in reading knowledge that affect their ability to access the wider curriculum and prepare for their next stage
  • Leadership's oversight of the school's work is not sufficiently rigorous to evaluate the impact of improvements
  • A small number of pupils continue to display behaviour that falls short of expectations, occasionally using derogatory language

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with strong safeguarding culture and processes in place.

Extracurricular Activities

School council, university visits, apprenticeship learning opportunities, wide range of extra-curricular clubs

George Dixon Academy is a secondary school that has made progress since its last inspection, with a clearer vision for high-quality education and strong commitment to supporting disadvantaged pupils. However, the quality of education requires improvement, particularly in assessment practices and reading support for older pupils.
