How to choose a primary school

Primary schools in England teach children from Reception year (age 4-5) through to Year 6 (age 10-11), covering Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. State primary school places are allocated by your local authority, and most schools give priority to looked-after children, siblings already attending and proximity to home - so your catchment area and home-to-school distance carry real weight. Primary school applications go through your local council; the national deadline is 15 January in the year your child turns four.

When comparing primary schools, look at the Ofsted rating and Key Stage 2 SATs results in reading, writing and maths - but also visit in person. Class sizes, after-school clubs and wraparound care, the feel of the classrooms, and how the school supports the move to secondary all count. Outstanding primary schools do well in the data and on the day; use our league tables as a starting point, then weigh the results against what your family actually needs.

Frequently asked questions

How many primary schools are there in England?

School Signal lists 19,809 primary schools in England. You can filter them by Ofsted rating, gender and location, and compare results, pupil numbers and catchment areas side by side.

How are primary schools rated?

Schools in England are inspected by Ofsted and rated Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate. Independent schools are inspected by the ISI. Ratings sit alongside published exam results - Progress 8 and Attainment 8 for secondary schools, or KS2 SATs results for primary.

How do I apply for a school place?

Apply for a state school through your local authority's coordinated admissions process, naming your preferred schools by the national deadline. Independent schools run their own admissions, so contact them directly for entry requirements and fees.
