How to find the right school for an autistic child
Choosing a school for an autistic child means looking beyond league tables. The right setting depends on your child's needs - some thrive in a nurturing mainstream school with good SEND support, others need a specialist or special school. Look at the SEND information report, the ratio of support staff, sensory provision, and how the school handles transitions and communication.
Mainstream, specialist or special school?
Most autistic children attend mainstream schools with an SEN Support plan or an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan). Specialist units attached to mainstream schools offer more tailored support, while special schools focus entirely on children with SEND. An EHCP gives you the right to name a school and secures funded support.
What to ask on a school visit
Ask about the size of the SENCO team, how they use visual timetables and low-demand approaches, quiet/sensory spaces, staff autism training, and how they support unstructured times like breaks. Ask to speak to other SEND parents - their experience tells you more than any brochure.
