What This School Does Well

The lower site primary provision is strong, with pupils achieving well from different starting points and developing confidence in their learning. The school is successful at identifying and closing gaps in basic skills like reading, writing and mathematics for younger pupils. Staff at the lower site respond sensitively to pupils' emotional needs and create a calm, orderly environment where pupils behave well.

Key Strengths

  • Primary-age pupils at the lower site learn and achieve well from their starting points
  • Early reading support for primary-age pupils is effective, with pupils learning to read with fluency and understanding
  • Lower site is calm and orderly with staff responding sensitively to pupils' emotional needs
  • School has established a broad curriculum

Areas for Improvement

  • Safeguarding culture is not open and positive, putting pupils at significant risk of harm
  • Secondary-age pupils do not achieve well and leave school ill-prepared for education, employment or training
  • Attendance rates at the upper site are very low with ineffective systems to track pupil whereabouts
  • Behaviour at the upper site is poor with frequent bullying, swearing and aggressive behaviour that prevents most pupils from learning
  • Staff lack expertise to manage challenging behaviour and curriculum design is weak with unclear learning objectives

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards not met - leaders have not created an open and positive culture around safeguarding, pupils are not safe, there are high levels of unexplained absence with inadequate systems to check pupil whereabouts, and bullying and aggressive behaviour happen frequently.

Trinity Academy Newcastle requires special measures due to failing to provide an acceptable standard of education. The school has serious safeguarding concerns, with pupils at risk of harm due to ineffective leadership and poor behaviour management.
