What This School Does Well

This school excels at creating an inclusive, family-like environment where children from many different backgrounds learn together with respect and pride. Teachers make lessons enjoyable and ensure every child - including those learning English as a new language - gets the right support and level of challenge. Reading and writing skills are particularly strong, with pupils writing with confidence and pleasure.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding behaviour and safety - pupils from different backgrounds work happily together with mutual respect and bullying is very rare
  • Strong progress in reading and writing, with writing improving significantly since the last inspection
  • Teaching is nearly always good or better, with teachers making learning enjoyable and ensuring all pupils get the right level of challenge
  • Excellent support for pupils learning English as an additional language, with peer buddies helping new arrivals settle quickly
  • Leaders and governors are committed to continuous improvement and have made progress across all areas of the school

Areas for Improvement

  • Not enough outstanding teaching - some lessons require improvement and occasionally work is not challenging enough for some pupils
  • Mathematical achievement lags behind English, particularly in Key Stage 2, and pupils lack opportunities to solve problems using maths skills
  • Teacher comments in pupils' books are sometimes too vague and don't clearly explain how to improve
  • Pupils' understanding of mathematical vocabulary sometimes holds back their learning

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - pupils feel entirely safe at school, bullying is very rare, and the school provides excellent pastoral care and support for all pupils.

Netherthorpe Primary School is a good school where different groups of pupils make good progress, with particularly strong achievement in reading and writing. The school serves a diverse population with many pupils speaking English as an additional language and provides excellent support to help all children succeed.
