What This School Does Well
Westways is a caring, inclusive school where children from many different backgrounds learn together with genuine respect and tolerance for one another. Parents highly value the school's warm ethos and most pupils feel safe and happy. The school has made real progress in teaching reading, particularly in the Early Years and Year 1 classes.
Key Strengths
- Strong community ethos with excellent relationships between pupils from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds who show great tolerance and respect
- Most pupils behave well, work hard in lessons and feel safe at school
- Improvements to teaching of letters and sounds are helping pupils' reading progress in Early Years and Key Stage 1
Areas for Improvement
- Inconsistent pupil progress, particularly in mathematics and for lower ability pupils and those with special educational needs
- Gap between disadvantaged pupils (pupil premium) and other pupils is widening, not closing
- Teaching quality is inconsistent with work not always matched to pupil needs - too easy for some able pupils and too hard for lower ability pupils
- Leadership and governors have not robustly checked implementation of policies or critically evaluated the impact of additional funding
- Low expectations of pupil work quality and presentation, with inconsistent behaviour management
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements were checked and found to be in place, though the report does not provide a specific overall judgment on safeguarding effectiveness.
Westways Primary School requires improvement following a decline from its previous 'Good' rating. The school has not made sufficient progress in teaching quality and pupil achievement, particularly in mathematics and for disadvantaged pupils.
