What This School Does Well

Your child will be well cared for in a safe, supportive environment with particularly strong pastoral care for vulnerable pupils. The school has an engaging curriculum that develops character through thought-provoking activities and visits, and pupils show positive behaviour and excellent attendance. Mathematics progress is solid in Years 7 and 8, with good opportunities to develop skills across sports and enrichment activities.

Key Strengths

  • Good progress and achievement in mathematics, especially in Years 7 and 8
  • Positive pupil behaviour and attitudes to learning with above average attendance
  • Strong care and support for vulnerable pupils and those with high anxiety
  • Engaging curriculum that fosters excellent spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
  • Pupils feel safe and well protected

Areas for Improvement

  • Variable progress and achievement in reading, writing and mathematics - attainment not high enough at end of Year 6
  • Teaching lacks consistent challenge - tasks not always matched to pupil abilities
  • Weak written feedback in books that doesn't add enough challenge to learning
  • Attainment gap between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils closing too slowly
  • Leadership and governors not holding senior leaders accountable robustly enough

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective and meets requirements, with assured approaches established in day-to-day routines and careful protection of vulnerable pupils.

Extracurricular Activities

Breakfast and after-school clubs, sports clubs and teams, judo, science and technology initiatives

Monkseaton Middle School requires improvement following a decline in achievement and attainment since the previous inspection, particularly in reading, writing and mathematics in Key Stage 2. The school is working to address underperformance through strengthened leadership and improved teaching.
