What This School Does Well

The school excels at supporting vulnerable students, with those with disabilities, special needs, and disadvantaged backgrounds making good progress. Staff build very positive relationships with students who feel safe and behave well. The school provides a rich range of enrichment activities and visits that develop students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Key Strengths

  • Students with disabilities, special educational needs, and those eligible for pupil premium make good progress due to focused support
  • Behaviour is good with very positive staff-student relationships and above average attendance
  • Leaders and governors have a clear vision for improvement and strong community support

Areas for Improvement

  • Too few students make good progress in English and mathematics, especially the most able students
  • Teachers do not challenge students enough or ask questions that encourage detailed responses
  • Teaching expertise in the school is not shared widely enough to ensure consistent good progress
  • Sixth form attainment at highest grades is below national standards

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - students feel safe, bullying is dealt with promptly and well, and students understand different types of bullying including digital media, racism and homophobia.

Extracurricular Activities

Football Academy, wide range of visits and enrichment activities

Monkseaton High School requires improvement overall. While behaviour and leadership are good, achievement and teaching quality need to improve, particularly for the most able students.
