Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Pupils really enjoy coming to Marden Bridge and behave well both in lessons and around school. The school has a group of dedicated teachers who are actively working to improve teaching, and when lessons are well-planned with interesting tasks, pupils make good progress and become fully engaged in their learning. The school does an excellent job of developing pupils' character and values through assemblies and lessons.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils behave well, have good attitudes to learning, and attendance is above average
  • A group of motivated teachers are bringing about improvements in teaching and learning
  • Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness is developed well
  • Pupils are making increasingly good progress in English

Areas for Improvement

  • Achievement is inconsistent between subjects - progress in mathematics is slower than in English
  • The most able pupils are not sufficiently challenged and do not reach higher levels
  • Teaching quality varies between subjects and best practice is not shared
  • Marking is irregular and feedback on how to improve work is not consistently good
  • Safeguarding systems for monitoring behaviour patterns are not rigorous enough

Safeguarding

The school's work to keep pupils safe and secure requires improvement because systems to check patterns of pupil behaviour are not sharp enough and records of staff safeguarding training are not well organised.

Marden Bridge Middle School is a smaller than average secondary school that requires improvement after being rated Good at its previous inspection. The school has declined in overall effectiveness due to inconsistency in teaching quality and pupil progress across subjects.
