What This School Does Well
Middlemarch School excels at welcoming all pupils, including those who join mid-year, and helping them quickly feel part of the community. Teachers are skilled at adapting their teaching to support pupils with different needs - from those learning English as an additional language to those with special educational needs. The school has a particular strength in reading, helping pupils become fluent readers quickly, which prepares them well for secondary school.
Key Strengths
- Excellent support for pupils joining the school mid-year and those with gaps in prior knowledge - they are quickly integrated through a buddy system
- Strong teaching of reading with most pupils becoming fluent readers by end of Year 4, even those who started at early stages
- Well-designed curriculum in most subjects, with clear sequencing of knowledge (e.g. building hand grips before advanced tennis skills)
- Effective support for pupils with SEND and those learning English as an additional language using varied strategies
- Positive behaviour and respectful relationships between pupils create a calm, focused learning environment
Areas for Improvement
- In a small number of subjects, the key knowledge pupils should learn is not clearly identified, limiting teachers' ability to check pupils' understanding
- Some pupils do not attend school regularly enough, which limits their learning progress
- Published outcomes do not yet match national averages, though pupils do learn well
- Need for further challenge and support to improve attendance rates
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective with clear systems in place to keep pupils safe.
