Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Cranbury College excels at supporting some of Reading's most vulnerable pupils, including those who have been excluded from other schools. Staff skilfully build pupils' confidence and self-esteem while maintaining high expectations. The school creates an inclusive, accepting environment where pupils feel valued and can develop their interests and hobbies for the first time.

Key Strengths

  • Creates a nurturing environment where pupils' mental health and well-being are prioritized through support and practical strategies like breathing exercises and sensory breaks
  • Successfully helps anxious pupils overcome barriers to learning, with most returning to mainstream education or gaining qualifications like GCSEs and BTEC Diplomas
  • Provides strong reading support matched to pupils' individual needs, with effective catch-up programs that build confidence

Areas for Improvement

  • Some teachers do not check pupils' understanding well enough before teaching new topics, leaving gaps in knowledge that slow progress
  • Attendance remains a significant concern for some pupils, including disadvantaged pupils, who miss important learning due to persistent absence

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective.

Extracurricular Activities

Gaming club, gym, chess club, art projects with local artists, mental health awareness activities, workshops run by visitors, educational trips, careers guidance

This report is for Cranbury College, not Horizons AP Academy. The inspection found that Cranbury College has maintained good standards with effective action, providing a supportive environment where kindness and inclusion help vulnerable pupils re-engage with learning.
