Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Havelock Academy creates a calm learning environment where pupils behave well in lessons and benefit from strong relationships with teachers. The school provides excellent support for pupils with additional needs through specialist provisions and has made significant improvements to attendance. Leaders are committed to embedding high behavioural expectations and working with external agencies to keep pupils safe.

Key Strengths

  • Calm and purposeful lessons with strong teacher-pupil relationships and frequent positive behaviour rewards
  • Effective support for pupils with SEND through 'The Wave' provision and 'HIVE' alternative provision
  • Improved attendance systems with significant progress for persistently absent pupils
  • Pupils feel safe and confident reporting concerns to staff
  • Clear safeguarding systems and frequent staff training on local risks

Areas for Improvement

  • New behaviour policies not yet consistently applied across all staff - some perceived as too strict and others too lenient
  • Short-term rise in suspensions and permanent exclusions following raised expectations
  • Some pupils lack personal motivation to succeed despite compliance with routines
  • A small number of pupils reluctant to report bullying due to peer perceptions
  • Internal truancy has risen though strategies are beginning to reduce it

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with clear systems for reporting concerns, frequent staff training on local risks, and pupils reporting they feel safe and know who to approach for help.

Havelock Academy received an urgent inspection focusing on behaviour following concerns raised by Ofsted. Leaders have taken effective action to maintain standards of behaviour and attitudes through a new behaviour policy and 'reset' of expectations.
