Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

English Martyrs' is exceptionally well led with outstanding behaviour and attendance. Your child will be part of a caring Catholic community where disadvantaged pupils are supported brilliantly, and teaching staff work hard to help all children achieve well. The school has an outstanding new curriculum and excellent relationships between staff and pupils.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding leadership and management with a highly effective headteacher pursuing excellence in teaching and learning
  • Pupils behave exceptionally well at all times and have exemplary attitudes to learning
  • Well above average attendance and pupils' attainment significantly above average, particularly in reading and grammar
  • Exceptional support for disadvantaged pupils ensuring they achieve well and participate fully in school life
  • Outstanding curriculum that deepens pupils' knowledge and understanding

Areas for Improvement

  • Not all pupils, especially the most able, are consistently challenged with sufficiently difficult work in every class
  • Pupils do not always have enough opportunity to write at length to develop their writing skills further
  • Quality of teaching needs to improve to be outstanding across the whole school, particularly in Key Stage 1

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - the school has rigorous systems in place and pupils are supremely confident in approaching staff with concerns knowing they will be listened to and taken seriously.

Extracurricular Activities

String, brass and percussion instruments, residential learning trips in Years 5 and 6, physical education and sport programmes, visits to places of worship

English Martyrs' Catholic Primary School is a good school with outstanding leadership and exceptional behaviour standards. The school has a strong Catholic ethos and provides excellent support for disadvantaged pupils, though it was previously rated outstanding.
