What This School Does Well

The school has excellent behaviour and safety practices, with pupils polite, confident and engaged in learning. New leadership through a federation partnership is making rapid improvements to teaching quality and pupil progress. Reading skills are developing particularly well, and the early years provision helps young children make strong progress from their starting points.

Key Strengths

  • Strong new leadership through federation partnership is driving rapid improvements in teaching and pupil progress
  • Behaviour and safety are good - pupils are polite, well-mannered and confident about keeping themselves safe
  • Early years provision is a strength with children making good progress from low starting points
  • Reading skills are improving significantly across the school
  • Phonics teaching is well-developed

Areas for Improvement

  • Academic standards in writing and mathematics remain below national expectations at end of Key Stages 1 and 2
  • Teaching of writing does not provide enough opportunities for pupils to extend skills in different contexts
  • Achievement gaps between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils still exist in some parts of school
  • Not enough pupils are making accelerated progress needed to catch up to national standards

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with robust practices in place - school tackles discrimination seriously, works with Prevent team on extremism concerns, and keeps detailed records of referrals.

Extracurricular Activities

Project 360 art initiative, work with artist creating public displays, physical education with specialist coach, themed curriculum activities exploring British values

Dawlish Primary School requires improvement overall. While leadership is now good and improving rapidly, academic standards in reading, writing and mathematics remain below national expectations, particularly at Key Stages 1 and 2.
