What This School Does Well

This school excels at helping pupils who have faced significant challenges to build confidence and develop positive relationships. Staff use expert clinical knowledge and a caring approach (PACE - Playful, Accepting, Curious, Empathetic) to support each pupil's individual needs. Pupils leave well-prepared for their futures with strong academic qualifications and the social skills they need to succeed.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent support for pupils' well-being and emotional development through collaborative work with clinical and therapeutic staff
  • Strong reading programme with expert phonics teaching that genuinely engages pupils
  • Exemplary pupil attendance rates due to pupils feeling safe and secure
  • Well-organised personal development curriculum including PSHE and careers guidance
  • Consistent, positive approach to behaviour management using evidence-based strategies

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing expectations are not consistent across the curriculum - pupils don't practise writing skills in subjects beyond English
  • Quality assurance systems for the recently revised primary curriculum need strengthening to check that improvements are actually working
  • Systems to evaluate the impact of changes to the curriculum are still developing and not yet effective in all areas

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with the school taking appropriate action on concerns and pupils confident to voice issues.

Extracurricular Activities

Ice-skating, adventurous woodland activities, anti-bullying ambassador roles

Broadbeck Learning Centre is an independent special school for pupils aged 6-18 with social, emotional and mental health needs. The school is rated Good overall and provides a caring environment where pupils build positive self-esteem and develop healthy relationships.
