What This School Does Well
William Torbitt is a welcoming school where children from many different backgrounds thrive and make good progress. Teachers plan lessons carefully with strong attention to writing and good behaviour throughout the school. The school works hard to support all learners, including those learning English as an additional language, and has successfully narrowed the gap for disadvantaged pupils.
Key Strengths
- Pupils make good progress in reading, writing and mathematics with attainment above average in writing and mathematics by end of Year 6
- Teaching is mostly good with a strong focus on writing across all subjects and well-structured lesson planning
- Leaders, governors and staff make rigorous checks on teaching quality and pupil progress to raise standards
- Children in Early Years Foundation Stage make good progress and are well prepared for Year 1
- Behaviour is good with pupils eager to learn and feeling safe at school
Areas for Improvement
- Work provided for higher ability pupils is not always demanding enough to promote rapid progress
- Lower ability pupils without special educational needs could be challenged to move to the next level more quickly
- Teaching of reading is inconsistent across different year groups
- Teachers do not involve pupils sufficiently in evaluating their own learning and progress through discussions and written feedback
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective - the school teaches pupils to use the internet safely and pupils feel confident that teachers will deal quickly with any concerns.
William Torbitt Primary School is a good school where pupils achieve well with improved progress in reading, writing and mathematics since the previous inspection. The school has strong leadership, good teaching quality, and positive behaviour, though it is not yet outstanding.
