What This School Does Well

Whitchurch Primary School creates a warm, welcoming environment where pupils feel secure and happy. Teachers are skilled at explaining concepts clearly and checking understanding, particularly in reading and maths, so pupils build strong foundations for learning. The school goes beyond academics to develop caring, responsible pupils who show genuine kindness and respect towards each other.

Key Strengths

  • Strong teaching of phonics and reading - all pupils become fluent readers by end of Year 2
  • Excellent behaviour and kindness - pupils are well-behaved, respectful and help others fit in
  • Effective teaching of basic maths skills - pupils understand how numbers work from Reception onwards
  • Rich programme of activities and experiences that develop pupils' character and resilience
  • Teachers check understanding before pupils work independently and adapt lessons for pupils with special needs

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not apply the school's agreed teaching methods consistently across all subjects - for example, the 'I do, We do, You do' approach is used clearly in English and maths but not consistently in geography
  • This inconsistency means pupils could achieve even more in some subjects beyond English and maths

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective, with the school maintaining strong arrangements to keep pupils safe and creating a positive culture around safeguarding.

Extracurricular Activities

Sport, climbing, dancing, scootering, reading, drawing, silver and gold badge awards programme for Year 6 pupils

Whitchurch Primary School has maintained good standards since its previous inspection. Pupils achieve highly in reading, writing and mathematics, with a strong focus on developing their character and personal skills.
