Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Vallis First School is a caring community where children thrive both academically and personally. The school excels at teaching reading from the very start, and has made impressive improvements to maths, particularly in times tables. Children benefit from a rich personal development programme that helps them understand the world around them and value differences.

Key Strengths

  • Strong relationships between staff and pupils, with effective pastoral support helping children feel safe and settled
  • Excellent reading provision from Reception Year onwards, with skilled staff supporting all pupils including those needing extra help
  • Significant improvements to mathematics curriculum, including strong focus on times table fluency
  • Well-designed personal development curriculum that helps pupils understand fairness, equality, and the wider world
  • Quick identification and effective support for pupils with SEND, allowing them to access the curriculum alongside peers

Areas for Improvement

  • In some foundation subjects, older pupils have gaps in prior knowledge that make it hard to learn new content - the school needs better strategies to identify and address these gaps
  • Tasks in some foundation subjects are not well matched to what pupils need to learn, making it difficult for them to secure their knowledge

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and the school has created a positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Library roles, nurse assistant roles, spick and span team, school ambassadors, trips to local river and historical sites, breakfast club

Vallis First School is a rapidly improving school with a warm, welcoming community where pupils and staff feel valued. The school has worked at pace to address previous weaknesses and is now in a position of stability with good outcomes across all key areas.
