What This School Does Well
Oakfield Academy is making real improvements in how it teaches pupils to read, with a new system that pinpoints exactly what each child needs help with. The school has also transformed its teaching approaches and behaviour management, creating calmer, more purposeful lessons where pupils are engaged. With strong support from its trust partnership and new leadership team, the school is tackling problems quickly and making progress.
Key Strengths
- Curriculum improvements at key stage 3 that are helping pupils learn well, with support from the trust's expertise
- Overhauled reading support system with thorough checks on knowledge gaps, helping pupils catch up faster
- Improved behaviour in lessons with clearer systems and stronger curriculum implementation
- Better accountability systems for middle leaders and teachers to identify and address dips in progress
- Strong support from the trust and effective governance oversight
Areas for Improvement
- Still a significant minority of pupils not achieving expected standards in reading, writing and mathematics at key stage 2
- Key stage 2 English curriculum needs further development to be more ambitious and well-designed
- Teaching approaches not yet fully rolled out across all teachers, with some inconsistency in checking pupil understanding
- Variable expectations for presentation and handwriting leading to inconsistent pupil work quality
- Need to improve provision for pupils with more complex needs and special educational needs
Oakfield Academy has made progress since joining the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership trust in 2024, with new leadership in place since April 2025. While there are improvements in curriculum design and pupil behaviour, some aspects of the school still need further development, particularly in reading standards and consistent teaching quality.
