What This School Does Well

The school has made real progress in improving attendance and behaviour, creating a calmer learning environment where most pupils feel safe. Teachers receive tailored support to develop their teaching skills, and pupils who are struggling with reading get effective individual help. Leaders have a clear understanding of what still needs to improve and are working collaboratively with other schools and the trust to drive further progress.

Key Strengths

  • Attendance has improved with more pupils attending school regularly
  • Behaviour in lessons is improving with typically calm classrooms and minimal disruption
  • Leadership structure has been strengthened and the senior team is working collaboratively with local schools
  • Pupils' attitudes have improved and most now feel safe in school
  • Reading support for pupils who have fallen behind is effective and helping them catch up quickly

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not consistently check that pupils know and remember new knowledge effectively
  • Curriculum implementation remains too variable across subjects and year groups
  • Pupils demonstrate passive learning behaviours rather than actively engaging in lessons
  • Too many pupils are late to school and to lessons, with punctuality remaining poor
  • Persistent absence and severe absence remain issues, particularly among pupils with SEND

Safeguarding

The school has taken appropriate steps to improve safeguarding responses, including better communication about bullying, though some pupils still report issues with prejudicial language and unkind comments.

The Eastbourne Academy was judged to have serious weaknesses in January 2025. This monitoring inspection in September 2025 found that leaders have made progress in improving the school, but more work is necessary before the serious weaknesses designation can be removed.
