Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

The Belsteads School excels at turning around pupils' negative views of education into positive experiences. Staff combine high expectations with tailored therapeutic support and compassionate care - including the help of school dogs Elmo and Sid - to help pupils flourish. The school provides a rich, bespoke curriculum with plentiful enrichment activities designed specifically for each pupil, preparing them well for their next steps.

Key Strengths

  • Staff have high expectations and provide strong support, helping pupils learn well and develop positive behaviour
  • Pupils receive extensive enrichment activities tailored to individual interests including sports, gardening, theatre trips, skiing and visits to places of worship
  • Personal, social and health education curriculum is excellent, helping pupils understand themselves, celebrate differences, and learn about different beliefs and faiths
  • Pupils build highly positive relationships with staff and feel safe and secure in school
  • Strong subject knowledge from teachers who explain concepts clearly, particularly in mathematics and geography

Areas for Improvement

  • Some classroom activities are not well-matched to pupil ability levels - work is sometimes too easy or too hard, limiting learning
  • Reading curriculum is not sequenced clearly enough, meaning some pupils experience disjointed progress and may be given texts that are too easy
  • Teachers need to adapt the curriculum more consistently to meet the varying needs and understanding levels of individual pupils

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with well-established systems, regular health and safety checks, and identified risks appropriately mitigated.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports, gardening, craft activities, tomato growing competition, skiing, theatre trips, museum visits, visits to places of worship, visiting speakers on gang life and knife crime awareness

The Belsteads School is an independent special school for pupils aged 10 to 17 with social, emotional and mental health needs. The school transforms pupils' lives by creating a place of happiness, kindness and warmth where they can thrive.
