Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

St Joseph's creates a happy, safe environment where pupils enjoy coming to school and behaviour is good. The school places a strong emphasis on developing pupils' values, respect and understanding of modern Britain. Pupils develop good writing skills and have access to a wide range of sports and cultural activities to enrich their learning.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils feel happy and safe with good attendance and very rare exclusions
  • Safeguarding is effective with regular staff training and a caring school culture
  • Strong emphasis on religious, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
  • Pupils' writing skills are well developed across the school
  • Good range of extra-curricular activities including sport, drama and modern languages

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality is inconsistent and expectations are not high enough, especially for the most-able pupils
  • Too few pupils make accelerated progress in reading, writing and mathematics
  • Assessment information is not used consistently by all teachers to improve learning
  • Work in some subjects like science lacks challenge and extended writing opportunities
  • Attainment remains below expected levels at the end of Year 6

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with regular staff training on identifying pupils at risk, appropriate recruitment checks, and a caring school atmosphere where pupils support each other.

Extracurricular Activities

Sport, drama, dance, modern foreign languages, homework club, Saturday teaching

St Joseph's RC Junior School requires improvement overall. While the school has a caring atmosphere and good behaviour, teaching quality and pupil outcomes need to strengthen, particularly in challenging the most-able pupils.
