What This School Does Well

The school has moved quickly to tackle its weaknesses since the February 2013 inspection. Leaders have replaced complacency with determination and are providing good quality support to help staff improve their teaching. Pupils are already starting to make better progress, particularly in reading and maths.

Key Strengths

  • Sharp focus on improving teaching quality with systematic tracking of pupils' progress
  • Pupils beginning to make much better progress in literacy and numeracy, particularly through phonics teaching
  • Strong leadership response to areas for improvement, including tough judgements on teaching and targeted support
  • Governors increasingly involved in holding the school to account and challenging staff on pupil progress

Areas for Improvement

  • Need to raise achievement further by strengthening teaching of literacy and numeracy across all subjects
  • Ensure more able pupils have high enough expectations to achieve the highest levels
  • Assessment analysis needs to consider ethnicity categories

St John and St James CofE Primary School was judged to require improvement in February 2013. This monitoring visit in June 2013 found that the school is making good progress in addressing identified weaknesses.
