Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Lea Valley Primary School is excellent at supporting children from diverse backgrounds - most pupils speak English as an additional language and the school quickly gets them accessing lessons in English. The school has made impressive progress in improving writing at Key Stage 1 and reading at Key Stage 2, with imaginative projects like 'boys only' reading clubs to boost engagement. Staff mark pupils' work really well and help them understand exactly what they need to do next to improve.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils make good progress in reading and writing, with some making outstanding progress - particularly older boys in reading and girls in Years 3-6 in writing
  • Teaching is generally good with positive relationships between pupils and staff, and classrooms are stimulating places to learn
  • Strong marking and feedback - pupils are very clear about how well they have done and what they need to do to improve
  • Effective support for disadvantaged pupils - the attainment gap for pupils eligible for free school meals has been significantly reduced
  • Good behaviour and strong relationships between pupils from different backgrounds

Areas for Improvement

  • Not enough teaching is outstanding - more lessons need to reach this level
  • Teachers talk for too long in lessons, leaving pupils with insufficient time to complete activities and work independently
  • Achievement in reading is still not as strong as in writing, and not all pupils have equal access to reading support with adults and peers

Safeguarding

The report examined safeguarding documents but did not provide a specific safeguarding effectiveness judgment in the summary sections.
