What This School Does Well

This is a wonderfully caring school where pupils feel cherished and develop confidence, independence and a love of learning. Staff go the extra mile to understand each child's individual needs and create a supportive community. Pupils behave very well, have high attendance, and benefit from a broad curriculum where they can succeed in arts, humanities, science, sport and academics.

Key Strengths

  • Consistently effective teaching with very positive relationships between staff and pupils
  • Inclusive Christian framework that successfully develops pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural values
  • Above average attainment in reading, writing and mathematics with good progress in these subjects
  • Excellent early years provision with children reaching notably above average standards
  • Broad and interesting curriculum including visits, out-of-school activities, and strong religious education

Areas for Improvement

  • Relatively few pupils reach higher standards in reading and writing in Key Stage 1 and 2
  • Insufficient focus on higher-attaining pupils who do not make as much progress as they could
  • Limited specific attention to disadvantaged pupils with high ability
  • Scope to raise expectations across all subjects so pupils achieve excellently, not just well

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - the school has thorough, up-to-date arrangements with detailed records, makes systematic checks on adults, and pupils receive valuable teaching about keeping safe including online safety.

Extracurricular Activities

Visits out, wide range of out-of-school activities, school council, playground buddy roles, prayer and worship leading

St Edmund's Catholic Primary School continues to be good, maintaining quality education since 2012. Under caring leadership, it provides a wonderfully supportive and nurturing learning environment where pupils behave very well and make good progress.
