What This School Does Well

St Bede's is excellent at nurturing a love of reading and helping children develop confidence in speaking and listening skills. The school is particularly skilled at supporting children from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with additional needs, helping them achieve more than similar children in other schools. Staff have high expectations for all pupils and create a calm, respectful environment where behaviour is exemplary.

Key Strengths

  • Behaviour is exemplary throughout the school with pupils being polite, courteous and well-behaved
  • Reading is very well promoted and pupils develop a strong love of books
  • Phonics teaching has improved significantly with pupils very confident in using these skills
  • Pupils with special educational needs and those eligible for free school meals make good progress and gain higher attainment than similar pupils nationally
  • Leadership at all levels is highly ambitious and has driven considerable improvements since the last inspection

Areas for Improvement

  • Too few pupils currently reach the higher level of attainment (Level 3) by the end of Key Stage 1
  • Teaching in Key Stage 1 is not yet consistently outstanding to ensure all pupils make rapid progress
  • Further development needed in ensuring high levels of challenge in all lessons

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - pupils understand bullying in all its forms, know how to stay safe in school and familiar contexts, and the school works exceptionally well with agencies and families.

St Bede's Catholic Infant and Nursery School is a good school where most pupils enter with skills well below their age but make rapid progress in the Early Years Foundation Stage and good progress in Key Stage 1. The school is particularly effective at supporting disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs, who achieve higher attainment than similar pupils nationally.
