What This School Does Well

Richard Atkins Primary School has created a wonderful learning environment where pupils are confident, happy and eager to learn. The school's leadership team has successfully turned around teaching quality, with pupils now making good progress in reading, writing and mathematics. The school is particularly effective at supporting disadvantaged pupils and ensuring all children who need extra help are quickly identified and given appropriate support.

Key Strengths

  • Strong leadership team that has effectively improved teaching and learning across the school
  • Good progress in reading, writing and mathematics, especially for disadvantaged pupils and most able pupils
  • Impressive climate for learning with confident, happy pupils who take risks and respond well to teachers
  • Effective support for pupils at risk of falling behind through targeted teaching and use of pupil premium funding
  • Well-trained staff and effective safeguarding arrangements with detailed records and thorough recruitment checks

Areas for Improvement

  • Early years outcomes remain below average, particularly for disadvantaged children in Reception
  • Teachers' questioning skills in reading activities could be stronger to help pupils gain deeper understanding of texts
  • Inconsistent teacher confidence in selecting books that challenge pupils appropriately
  • Mathematics teaching quality needs to be shared more consistently across key stage 2
  • Attendance and persistent absence rates remain a concern, though some improvements are showing

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - staff are well trained and vigilant, pupils feel safe and trust the adults who care for them, and all safeguarding arrangements and records are fit for purpose with thorough recruitment checks.
