Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school creates a warm, respectful environment where pupils behave well and have strong relationships with staff and each other. Early Years children make excellent progress, and pupils develop good reading and phonics skills as they move through the school. New interim leadership is making positive changes to improve teaching and pupil achievement.

Key Strengths

  • The two interim headteachers have made a very positive start and are driving improvement
  • Pupils behave well, have positive attitudes to learning, and relationships between adults and pupils are very good
  • Children in Early Years Foundation Stage make good progress in a stimulating environment
  • Nearly all pupils met expected levels in phonics screening and continue to do well in reading
  • Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs make similar progress to their peers through well-focused support

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many inconsistencies in pupil progress, especially in writing in Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2
  • Activities are not consistently challenging enough and pupils spend too much time on work they already know
  • Teacher marking does not clearly explain to pupils how well they have done or how to improve
  • Subject leaders and governors lack secure understanding of pupil progress data to help raise achievement
  • Pupils have too few opportunities to work independently, research, or write at length

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is not specifically evaluated in this report extract, though pupils confirm they feel safe and are aware of various dangers including bullying and cyber bullying.

St Andrew's CofE Primary School is a larger-than-average primary school that requires improvement after previously being rated outstanding. The school has experienced significant staffing changes and inconsistent progress in pupil achievement, particularly in writing across Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2.
