Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Southampton Solent University provides apprentices with expert teaching in well-equipped facilities and gives them real-world experience through partnerships with major employers like Heathrow Airport. The university excels at supporting apprentices to develop confidence and apply new skills successfully in their workplaces, with many gaining promotions after completing their apprenticeship. Staff provide strong academic support, particularly for those returning to study after time away from education.

Key Strengths

  • Knowledgeable staff and high-quality teaching facilities, including medical simulation suites for nursing practice
  • Well-planned curriculum that develops theoretical knowledge before practical application in the workplace
  • Effective use of questioning and feedback to check and deepen learning
  • Strong partnerships with businesses and industry leaders who deliver masterclasses and guest speaker sessions
  • Excellent support for apprentices with additional learning needs and those returning to education

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many apprentices remain past their planned end date without attempting their final assessment
  • Quality and content of progress reviews varies too much, with inconsistent target-setting for workplace skill development
  • Apprentices don't always receive clear information about their skills gaps or how to close them
  • Support for functional skills in English and mathematics needs further development to show full impact
