What This School Does Well

Sandwell College excels at supporting learners with additional needs, including those with mental health challenges and trauma, through specialist staff and tailored support. The college has built strong partnerships with local employers, particularly the NHS, creating real work experience and employment opportunities. For younger learners especially, the college is highly effective at helping them progress through their studies and move into the next level of learning or employment.

Key Strengths

  • Exceptional partnership working with employers and community organisations to meet local skills needs, including successful sector-based work academies
  • Highly effective inclusion strategy with specialist staff supporting learners with mental health, trauma and neurodiversity
  • Well-qualified teachers with relevant industry experience who use effective teaching techniques and assessment methods
  • Strong support for entry level, level 1 and level 2 learners who achieve qualifications at high rates
  • Carefully planned personal development curriculum including health, wellbeing, relationships and radicalisation awareness

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many level 3 learners (A level and vocational) not making enough progress from their starting points and not achieving expected grades
  • High dropout rates for learners continuing from first to second year of two-year level 3 courses
  • Some decline in outcomes for access to higher education courses
  • Need to improve use of assessment techniques to help level 3 learners achieve higher grades

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - the college has established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and acted upon, and learners are made safer and feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports teams, competitions, community events, leadership programmes, university visits, work experience placements, fashion week events, guest speakers on locally relevant topics

Sandwell College is a strong institution that has substantially improved since its previous inspection, with particularly effective inclusion strategies and strong partnerships with employers across the region.
