Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Rokeby School creates an excellent learning environment where pupils are highly engaged and well-behaved. Staff have very high expectations and provide strong support, with particular strengths in reading support and helping pupils with attendance issues. The school offers a rich range of opportunities for pupils to develop leadership skills and explore their interests through clubs, sports, music and community involvement.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent behaviour and relationships between pupils and staff, with disruption to lessons rare and never tolerated
  • Ambitious, carefully designed curriculum with strong subject knowledge from teachers
  • Exceptional enrichment offer including sports, music, dance, gardening and leadership roles
  • Effective support for pupils with low literacy skills through targeted phonics help
  • Strong focus on personal development with philosophical discussion sessions and comprehensive careers guidance from Year 7

Areas for Improvement

  • In some subjects, teachers do not consistently check pupils' understanding, so misconceptions are sometimes missed and pupils don't build knowledge as securely as they could
  • Curriculum is not always well adapted for pupils with SEND, meaning some struggle to access the ambitious curriculum intended for them

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with a strong culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Gardening, music, dance, competitive sports, mentoring roles, school ambassador positions, student council, philosophical discussion sessions

Rokeby School is a secondary comprehensive academy in Newham where pupils are well supported to succeed and show exceptional attitudes towards learning. The school has been judged as Good for quality of education, with Outstanding grades for behaviour and attitudes, and personal development.
