What This School Does Well

The school has some good teaching and learning happening in many classrooms, and attendance has started to improve. However, the school is currently struggling to use its existing strengths effectively and needs significant leadership and cultural changes to move forward quickly.

Key Strengths

  • Teaching and learning are good in many lessons
  • Attendance has improved slightly since the inspection
  • Middle leaders have received additional training to develop their skills

Areas for Improvement

  • No clear, shared plan has been formulated to address areas for improvement
  • No lesson observations or formal programme to tackle inadequate teaching has been established
  • Poor marking practice continues despite being highlighted as needing improvement
  • Governing body has not challenged the school sufficiently or created urgency for change
  • School culture lacks accountability and staff have resisted change

Our Lady and St Swithin's Catholic Primary School was judged to require improvement following an inspection in March 2013. This monitoring visit in June 2013 found that school leaders have not yet successfully addressed the identified weaknesses or inspired the school community to work together for rapid improvement.
