What This School Does Well
The Nursery is outstanding and helps children settle into a caring, happy environment. Teachers use clear speaking and plenty of discussion to help pupils develop language skills, which is particularly valuable given the high proportion of children learning English as an additional language. The school carefully supports all learners, including those with special needs and disadvantaged pupils, so they make strong progress from their starting points.
Key Strengths
- Outstanding Nursery provision with engaging, language-rich activities in a safe environment
- Strong support for pupils who speak English as an additional language, who achieve in line with national peers
- Well-trained teaching assistants working effectively as a team with teachers
- Good progress in mathematics and reading, with rising attainment faster than national rates
- Strong relationships between pupils and staff with good behaviour and above-average attendance
Areas for Improvement
- Not enough teaching is outstanding - more activities needed to stretch higher-ability pupils
- Pupils need more opportunities to respond to teachers' marking and show they have acted on feedback
- Writing attainment lags behind reading and mathematics - need to develop speaking skills further in Reception
- Limited opportunities for pupils to practise letter formation and writing
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective with children feeling safe and secure, all welfare needs met, and careful transition arrangements in place.
Minet Nursery and Infant School is a good school with a happy and well-ordered atmosphere. The school has made steady progress with teaching quality improving and pupils achieving well from low starting points.
