Admissions history and your chances at Maidstone Grammar School

The entrance test (11-plus)

Maidstone Grammar School admits pupils through an entrance test - in Kent, the Kent Test. Children have to be registered for it in advance, normally in the spring or summer of Year 5; the test itself is usually sat in September of Year 6, and results come out in October, before the 31 October deadline for naming secondary schools.

Passing the test makes a child eligible rather than guaranteeing a place: when more children pass than there are places, Maidstone Grammar School ranks them by the criteria in its admissions policy, which can include test score and distance. Check Kent's admissions pages and the school's own policy for this year's registration deadline - a child who is not registered in time cannot sit the test.

Kent has 32 state grammar schools in all, so a child who passes may have several selective schools to choose between.

Ofsted's report, in its own words

What is it like to attend this school?

Pupils thrive in this welcoming, aspirational school. The school promotes pupils' personal development as well as academic success. The school has high expectations of what pupils can achieve. Pupils rise to the challenge. They are eager to learn and value the opportunities the school offers. As one parent said: 'The school nurtures pupils into becoming the best version of themselves.' As a result, pupils achieve highly in national assessments.

The school has a strong sense of community. Diversity is welcomed and celebrated. Shared values of respect and responsibility are tangible. The vast majority of pupils behave well. Pupils value the support they receive from the school and feel safe. Sixth-form students are excellent role models for younger pupils, often acting as mentors and coaches.

What does the school do well and what does it need to do better?

The school's ambition to develop high-achieving, all-round pupils is being realised. Governors play an important part in driving this ambition. Staff are very proud to work here and there is a strong sense of collegiality. Staff at all levels feel supported, including teachers in the early stages of their careers. Leaders take great care of staff well-being and workload.

Pupils follow an ambitious curriculum. Teachers are clear about what they want pupils to know and be able to do. Consequently, pupils gain increasingly complex knowledge as they get older. Pupils build a solid academic foundation in key stage 3. In key stage 4, high numbers of pupils study the English Baccalaureate suite of subjects alongside others chosen from a very wide range. Many pupils continue their learning in the sixth form, studying an impressive choice of academic subjects offered to them. The school goes to great lengths to ensure that external students to the sixth form integrate quickly into the life of the school.
