Ofsted's report card, in its own words
What it's like to be a pupil at Lawrence Community Primary School
Pupils arrive at school smiling each day. They build positive relationships with leaders and staff, who know them well. Pupils are happy. The large number of pupils who join or return to the school mid-year settle quickly. They make friends easily. Pupils show care for each other by helping those who speak English as an additional language to feel that they belong. Pupils embrace the school's commitment to equality. They pledge to respect everyone, whatever their race, religion, gender, ability or appearance. Pupils demonstrate this behaviour in their relationships with each other. They have a well-embedded knowledge of fundamental British values. Pupils behave well. They are courteous and respectful to each other and adults. Pupils are confident that staff will help them when they feel anxious. They speak to trusted adults if they need help. Leaders deal swiftly with any bullying, including online incidents. Pupils attend school more regularly because of the leaders' successful actions. However, sometimes their punctuality remains variable. Pupils are safe and are taught to keep themselves safe. For example, they know not to play near a railway line. Pupils access a wealth of opportunities beyond the classroom that enrich their school experience. Typically, pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities and those who face barriers to learning, receive the help that they need to access the curriculum. For example, staff help pupils to develop language skills and learn to read. This supports the high number of pupils who speak English as an additional language to learn well. Children in the early years develop positive attitudes to school. However, they do not achieve as well as they should because the curriculum they study is in the early stages of implementation. Pupils in Years 1 to 6 benefit from an ambitious curriculum. Those pupils who attend the school for the longest period of time usually learn what is intended. Even so, gaps in pupils' knowledge mean that they are not as well prepared as they should be for their next stage of education.
What Ofsted says the school should do next
- Governors should increase their oversight of the school to better assure themselves of leaders' improvement actions and to offer appropriate support and challenge.
- Leaders should ensure that the early years curriculum is implemented fully and that staff deliver it well to build children's knowledge, develop their vocabulary and enable them to link and deepen their learning over time.
- Leaders should ensure that teachers consistently provide pupils with activities that are well-matched to the intended learning outcome. They should also continue to close gaps in pupils' knowledge so that they can achieve well and be better prepared for their next steps.
- Leaders should ensure the pupils' punctuality improves so that they gain full benefit from the curriculum.
- Leaders should maximise the use of additional support for pupils at the start of the school day to help narrow the historical gaps that pupils have in their knowledge.
