What This School Does Well

The school provides a warm, supportive environment where all pupils feel valued and safe. Reading is a priority with staff regularly checking progress and celebrating achievement. Pupils benefit from excellent leadership opportunities and a growing range of clubs and activities to explore their talents.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on reading with regular checks to identify pupils who need support - pupils are keen readers who enjoy a wide variety of genres -
  • Pupils have excellent leadership opportunities and vote for candidates, building their confidence -
  • Clear process for identifying and supporting pupils with SEND, with staff training in place -
  • Friendly, welcoming environment where pupils feel safe and have trusted adults to talk to

Areas for Improvement

  • Some staff lack subject knowledge and skills to teach curriculum content effectively, and don't always correct pupils' misconceptions -
  • Early years curriculum lacks ambition and doesn't prepare children sufficiently for Year 1 -
  • Behaviour expectations are inconsistent across staff, causing some disruption to learning -
  • Limited teaching of different faiths and cultures, meaning some pupils cannot engage with different beliefs

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and the school has created a positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Film club, art club, football, sports competitions, enterprise week, cooking lessons, school fair performances

Houghton Regis Primary School is a friendly, happy school where pupils feel safe and respected. However, the quality of education, behaviour, and personal development all require improvement, though leadership is rated as good.
