Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Hawksworth Wood is a warm, nurturing school where children feel safe and happy. The school excels at teaching reading and has worked hard to design a strong curriculum that helps pupils learn important knowledge. Your child will benefit from excellent pastoral care, lots of interesting trips and visits, and plenty of clubs to get involved in.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on teaching children to read fluently and with confidence, with effective interventions to support those who need catch-up
  • Well-designed curriculum that identifies and teaches important knowledge across most subjects
  • Nurturing ethos with high-quality pastoral support helps pupils flourish and behave positively
  • Pupils have access to a wide range of rich personal development opportunities including debates, trips, and visits
  • Strong extra-curricular offer including baking, photography, and music clubs

Areas for Improvement

  • In a few subjects, learning activities do not clearly deliver the intended curriculum, so pupils do not learn as well as they could
  • Some pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils do not have adequate support to access the curriculum
  • Persistent absence rates are too high for some pupils, particularly those with SEND or who are disadvantaged, causing them to miss important learning

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with the school creating a positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Baking clubs, photography clubs, music clubs, trips to the seaside, local abbey visits, overnight residentials

Hawksworth Wood Primary School is a Good school where pupils feel happy and safe, supported by a nurturing ethos and high expectations. The school has made many curriculum improvements and provides rich personal development opportunities for all pupils.
