Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Eastfield Nursery creates an exceptionally caring environment where children flourish as confident, curious learners. The school excels at making learning exciting through creative play and outdoor exploration, inspiring all children - particularly boys - to develop strong writing and communication skills. Parents are overwhelmingly supportive, with children making outstanding progress in personal, social and emotional development alongside their academic learning.

Key Strengths

  • Exceptional outdoor learning environment with forest school, wild garden and mud kitchen that inspires boys' writing and develops all areas of learning
  • Outstanding progress in communication, language and literacy skills through creative play and rich activities like storytelling with the life-size Gruffalo
  • Outstanding provision for 'Terrific Twos' with highly skilled staff who understand very young children's needs
  • Rigorous monitoring and tracking of children's progress with systems to identify and address areas for improvement
  • Caring ethos with high expectations where children are confident to try new things

Areas for Improvement

  • Lack of parity in mathematical learning opportunities compared with literacy - fewer displays of mathematical language and fewer activities to develop maths skills
  • Missed opportunities both indoors and outdoors for adults to help children become more familiar with the language and symbols of mathematics

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective, with all required staff checks completed, regular training on protecting children from radicalisation and extremism, secure premises, thorough risk assessments, and strong support for vulnerable families.

Extracurricular Activities

Forest school, Woodlands Project (parent-child outdoor learning), mud kitchen, wild garden, adventure trails, body painting activities

Eastfield Nursery School continues to be outstanding, with leadership maintaining exceptional quality of education since the last inspection in 2012. All groups of children make outstanding progress and leave as confident, independent learners well-prepared for primary school.
