What This School Does Well

The school excels at helping students who have struggled in mainstream education. Staff build excellent relationships with students, making them feel safe and valued - many students say this is the first school where they have truly settled. The school helps students catch up on missed learning, particularly in English and maths, and almost all students gain qualifications that help them move on to further education, training or employment.

Key Strengths

  • Teaching is good and improving, with some outstanding lessons that help students make rapid progress
  • Staff provide high quality care and support that helps students feel safe and engaged
  • Students' behaviour is good and their personal skills develop well during their time at the school
  • Strong outreach support is provided to other schools in the local area

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not always plan lessons to meet individual students' needs, which slows their progress
  • The purpose and use of writing in lessons is not always clear or well-managed
  • Teaching assistants are sometimes not deployed effectively to support learning
  • Systems for tracking students in off-site placements were not robust enough
  • Some students have high absence rates and there are too many physical restraints

Safeguarding

Safeguarding systems required improvement - the school needed more robust policies and procedures to fully safeguard students attending alternative education placements off-site.

Clifford Holroyde Specialist SEN College is a school for boys with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties that requires improvement following its inspection in October 2013. While teaching quality is good and students make progress, inconsistent lesson planning and leadership systems need strengthening.
