What This School Does Well

This school excels at helping pupils who have struggled in mainstream education feel safe, valued and confident. Staff are genuinely caring and take time to understand each pupil's individual needs and barriers to learning. The school deliberately builds pupils' communication skills, social confidence and self-esteem through a rich programme of outdoor activities, community visits and leadership opportunities.

Key Strengths

  • Strong inclusive culture where every pupil is known as an individual and supported to thrive
  • Excellent personal, social, health and economic education programme with real-world learning through visits and community engagement
  • Well-sequenced curriculum in English, mathematics and PSHE that builds pupils' knowledge progressively
  • Effective behaviour management and attendance support, creating a calm and respectful environment
  • Caring staff who build strong relationships and help pupils overcome previous negative school experiences

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistencies in how well reading and writing are taught across the school - not all pupils read as often as they could
  • Gaps in depth and detail of pupils' written work
  • Need for stronger consistency in supporting and challenging each pupil to reach their potential
  • Further work needed to evaluate which improvement actions have been most effective
  • Limited careers education and work placement opportunities for older pupils

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - the school has created an open and positive culture of safeguarding where all legal requirements are met and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Garden and allotment activities, autism-focused events, student council, visits to local temples and churches, community engagement with local contractors and charities, driving lessons, music

Brickyard Barn Outdoor Learning Centre is a special educational needs school that provides targeted support to help pupils with SEND achieve well from their starting points. The school creates a safe, inclusive environment where pupils develop important life skills alongside core academics.
