What This School Does Well

This school creates a warm, respectful environment where pupils thrive academically and personally. Reading is celebrated throughout the school with strong phonics teaching in Early Years and a new programme being rolled out. The school works hard to support all pupils' well-being and mental health, with specialist counselling services and staff training.

Key Strengths

  • Strong promotion of reading with a new phonics programme embedded across the school
  • Outstanding Early Years provision where children develop rapidly in social, communication and reading skills
  • Well-organised curriculum across most subjects with clear progression of knowledge and skills
  • Comprehensive support for pupils with additional needs and those falling behind
  • Active promotion of mental health, well-being and healthy lifestyles

Areas for Improvement

  • A few subjects still need curriculum refinement - subject leaders are still deciding what content pupils need to learn and in what order
  • New phonics programme in Years 1-6 is not yet consistent, limiting effectiveness for pupils needing extra reading support
  • Need to ensure consistency of approach to early reading beyond Early Years so all pupils develop reading fluency

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with leaders knowledgeable about up-to-date requirements, staff well-trained and alert to risks, correct referral procedures followed, and pupils taught how to stay safe online and report concerns.

Extracurricular Activities

coding, chess, physical education, dance, school council, eco council, educational outings and special events

Bousfield Primary School is a cheerful and welcoming school where pupils are polite, respectful and safe. The school has been rated as Good overall, with an Outstanding Early Years provision.
