Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Ashburnham does a good job of making pupils feel safe and cared for, which is reflected in their positive attitude to school and improved attendance. The school is proactively working with a partner school to improve teaching and raise achievement. Reading and maths are particular strengths, with pupils making satisfactory progress by the end of primary school.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils feel safe and enjoy school, with improving attendance
  • Achievement in reading and mathematics is broadly average, with above-average phonics results
  • Strong partnership working with another school to share expertise and improve teaching

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing standards are significantly below average - pupils lack basic handwriting, spelling and punctuation skills
  • Teaching is inconsistent across the school, with teachers not always understanding what level pupils are working at
  • Lessons do not always engage pupils or build on previous learning
  • Leadership needs strengthening, particularly among middle leaders who are new to their roles

Safeguarding

Safeguarding was found to be effective, with pupils reporting they feel safe because adults care for them.

Ashburnham Primary School requires improvement after previously being rated good. The school faces challenges in writing achievement and teaching consistency, though behaviour and safety are good.
