- Early writing teaching is not as effective as it should be - writing resources and activities are not always matched to children's needs, leading to misconceptions in letter formation, spelling and punctuation
- In some subjects, teachers do not effectively identify and address gaps and misconceptions in pupils' knowledge
- Some pupils are not building sufficiently on their previous learning as a result
