From Ofsted's March 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Witley is a happy, caring place where children thrive. The school has excellent phonics teaching that gets children reading quickly, combined with strong support for behaviour and emotional well-being. Pupils are taught to be kind, respectful citizens who understand the importance of differences and how to stay safe online and in the community.

Key Strengths

  • High-quality phonics programme helps pupils learn to read quickly and typically meet the phonics screening check by end of Year 1
  • Excellent behaviour - pupils are kind, thoughtful and look out for each other
  • Very effective work on pupils' personal development and well-being, including mental health support and teaching about respecting differences
  • Strong support for pupils with SEND who achieve well
  • High levels of care help Reception children settle quickly and feel safe and secure

Areas for Improvement

  • In some subjects, curriculum knowledge has not been broken down into manageable steps, making it harder for pupils to build secure knowledge over time
  • Learning activities are not always closely matched to what individual pupils need to learn next, meaning some find work too challenging while others find it too easy
  • Teachers need clearer guidance on curriculum knowledge to design more effective learning activities

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with pupils confident about trusted adults they can approach if worried.

Extracurricular Activities

Craft clubs, music clubs, school library roles, table monitors, school councillors

Witley CofE Controlled Infant School has maintained good standards since its previous inspection. Pupils thoroughly enjoy school, work hard in lessons, and the vast majority leave ready for Key Stage 2.
