Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The college creates a welcoming and inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported. Teachers are experienced professionals who make lessons interesting and help students develop real-world skills through work experience and employer partnerships. The college works hard to ensure students progress to positive next steps, whether that's further study, university, apprenticeships or employment.

Key Strengths

  • Strong inclusive culture where students feel safe and supported, with tailored support for those with barriers to learning
  • Well-designed curriculums relevant to local and regional priorities, with good employer involvement in most areas
  • Teachers are knowledgeable, well-qualified with industry experience, and use effective teaching strategies
  • Most students achieve vocational and technical qualifications and progress to positive destinations
  • Leaders have refreshed governance and strengthened accountability structures

Areas for Improvement

  • GCSE English and mathematics progress is too slow - students are not developing problem-solving skills quickly enough in some lessons
  • Attendance at GCSE mathematics and English lessons is lower than at vocational lessons
  • Some apprenticeships lack employer contribution to teaching
  • Achievement in a few areas such as construction and health and social care remains below national rates

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture in which safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and concerns are actively identified, acted upon and managed, making learners safer and helping them feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Employer talks, trips and visits, work experience abroad (such as South Africa for early years students), live briefs from employers, access to university health care experience

Wirral Metropolitan College has strengthened its strategic leadership and governance since the previous inspection, with leaders now having a clear understanding of their strengths and priorities. The college has built a supportive culture of inclusion and works closely with employers in growth industries to meet regional skills needs.
