Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's June 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

University of Greenwich provides a supportive learning environment with highly knowledgeable lecturers who teach courses well-structured to build knowledge over time. Apprentices particularly value the practical support they receive, such as lecturers accompanying nursing associates on their first day of placements. As a result of their training, many apprentices gain promotions and develop the clinical expertise and professional values needed for their roles.

Key Strengths

  • Knowledgeable lecturers who are passionate about their subjects and create a supportive learning environment
  • Effective teaching strategies that help apprentices build knowledge progressively and apply it in complex situations
  • Strong workplace application - apprentices gain promotions and develop professional clinical skills
  • Comprehensive support including academic writing help, careers advice, and specialized assistance for apprentices with SEND
  • High achievement rates with many apprentices gaining merits and distinctions where available

Areas for Improvement

  • Too many apprentices on level 7 advanced clinical practitioner and level 6 chartered surveyor courses are leaving before completing their final assessments
  • Some apprentices on health-related courses show inconsistent professional behaviour in lessons, using mobile phones and talking over peers
  • Leaders lack in-depth oversight of overall apprenticeship quality and need stronger monitoring systems
  • Some level 7 apprentices spend time revisiting content they already understand due to ineffective initial assessment
  • Communication problems with level 6 laboratory scientist apprentices and their employers need addressing

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with apprentices receiving training on protecting themselves from risks including sexual harassment, extremism and terrorism.

Extracurricular Activities

Guest speakers from professional bodies, professional body membership, careers advice appointments, simulated clinical training environments

University of Greenwich is a higher education provider offering apprenticeships across 14 standards from level 5 to level 7, with around 450 apprentices studying subjects including nursing, midwifery, chartered surveying, and engineering. The provider was rated Good overall, maintaining its previous inspection rating.
