What This School Does Well

Since the new headteacher arrived, the school has made impressive improvements. Pupils are now making good progress in reading, writing and maths, with younger children particularly flourishing in Reception. The school provides a rich, broad curriculum and parents appreciate the enrichment opportunities available to their children.

Key Strengths

  • Strong leadership that has tackled weaknesses and set the school back on track after a period of instability
  • Effective new reading strategies with well-trained staff, resulting in good progress for most pupils
  • Rigorous safeguarding culture with tightened security, regular staff training, and clear reporting procedures
  • Good progress in Reception with above-average proportion reaching expected development
  • Broad curriculum including art, science, music, swimming, and learning about different faiths

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils from lower starting points need to make more consistent progress throughout the school
  • Outdoor provision in early years not as enriched with text, letters and numbers as indoor activities
  • Attendance remains just below average, particularly for disadvantaged pupils
  • New leaders and governors need more training and support to fulfil their ambitions
  • Governors need to ask more precisely focused questions to hold leaders fully to account

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with a strong culture in place - the school has tightened site security, reviewed policies, rigorously follows up absences, regularly trains staff, and keeps detailed records of any issues.

Extracurricular Activities

Swimming, instrumental tuition, dance, art, sport

St Luke's Church of England Primary School continues to be good. Since the headteacher's arrival in April 2015, the school has been revitalised with clear improvements in teaching, pupil progress, and safeguarding.
