Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Tunstall is a warm, welcoming nursery where staff genuinely care for your child and support their learning through play. Children with additional needs receive excellent support, and the large outdoor area and Forest School activities help build confidence and physical skills. Parents consistently praise how much their children enjoy coming to nursery.

Key Strengths

  • Staff work well as a committed team and parents praise the caring environment
  • Strong links with the children's centre and welcoming, inclusive school community
  • Well-resourced outdoor area and Forest School project support children's learning and confidence
  • Good support for disabled children and those with special educational needs
  • Children feel safe and enjoy school

Areas for Improvement

  • Leaders need to do formal lesson observations and monitoring of teaching quality more regularly
  • More-able children are not always challenged enough to make the best progress
  • Children learning English as an additional language need better support
  • School needs to properly analyse progress data for different groups of children
  • School development plan needs clearer deadlines and success measures based on impact

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - children feel safe and leaders ensure they are kept safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Forest School, outdoor learning activities

Tunstall Nursery School has dropped from Outstanding to Requires Improvement. While teaching is good and children make solid progress, leaders have not monitored teaching quality formally enough and have not properly tracked progress for different groups of children.
