What This School Does Well

Tiverton School creates a warm, welcoming environment where children feel safe and valued. Staff are skilled at understanding each child's individual needs and use creative teaching methods including sign language, symbols and visual supports to help all pupils learn. Parents have strong confidence in the school and pupils enjoy having their views heard through the school council.

Key Strengths

  • Strong relationships between staff and pupils that build confidence and encourage learning
  • Excellent communication with parents who feel their children are safe and happy
  • Well-structured support for pupils with clear next steps and visual aids to aid learning
  • Consistent use of sign language and symbols across the school to support all pupils
  • Staff commitment and willingness to adapt to new initiatives

Areas for Improvement

  • Curriculum planning for key stage 1 pupils does not always match their ages and abilities
  • Need to expand the senior leadership team to handle growing pupil numbers and diverse needs
  • New assessment system needs to be fully embedded to include personal and social development

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - the school has robust procedures in place, staff understand their duty to keep children safe, and pupils report feeling safe and happy.

Extracurricular Activities

School council, themed reading days (e.g. 'Do Something Booky'), visits from local police and fire services

Tiverton School continues to be good, maintaining quality education since its last inspection in 2012. The school is preparing to relocate to new purpose-built premises and expand to support a broader spectrum of special educational needs.
