Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Tirlebrook Primary School gives children an excellent start in the early years with caring staff who help them settle quickly and prepare well for Year 1. The school has effective phonics teaching, meaning all pupils learn to read well across the school. Current leaders are making real improvements to writing and mathematics teaching, and are working hard to ensure pupils with additional needs and disadvantaged pupils get the support they deserve.

Key Strengths

  • Early years curriculum is ambitious and well-sequenced with warm, caring relationships that help children settle quickly
  • Teaching of reading and phonics is effective across the school, enabling pupils to access the wider curriculum
  • Recent improvements to writing teaching are taking hold with better cohesion, punctuation and grammar
  • Leaders and governors are taking swift action to address past weaknesses with emerging improvements
  • Professional development programme is improving staff subject knowledge and staff morale

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils' achievement in writing and mathematics remains below national averages with gaps in mathematical skills like telling the time and problem-solving
  • Inconsistent application of behaviour policy by staff and slow record-keeping of incidents in the past
  • Weaknesses in some staff's subject knowledge and use of assessment across the curriculum
  • Support for pupils with special educational needs and disadvantaged pupils has not been consistent
  • Some pupils lack resilience and perseverance, impacting their enjoyment and academic progress

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and managed, and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Violin lessons, school council roles, house captain roles, singing at local care home and local church, artistic and musical talent development

Tirlebrook Primary School has a strong early years foundation where children settle quickly and are well prepared for Year 1. However, the school is in the process of addressing significant weaknesses in key stages 1 and 2, where pupils have previously underachieved in writing and mathematics compared to national averages.
